Second inaugural address

President Nixon: Yeah?

White House Operator: I have Rose.

Rose Mary Woods∇: Hello.

President Nixon: Yeah. Hello.

Woods: Hello?

President Nixon: Rose, I have--in--just got this copy and was marking it up and I--it may be that a sentence has been taken out that I wasn't sure about. But you don't happen to have anything there, do you?1

Woods: No, I don't. I just got this [unclear] before this--

President Nixon: Where it says, "We shall respect our treaty commitments," I think the next sentence was, "we shall defend our interests." That is not here, but--the only problem that I would--I can check it over. I'm going to have [Ronald] Ziegler∇ send over a copy of the press copy, and then I can conform it with this to be sure.

Woods: Well, the darn girls proofed it. It should have been right, but--

President Nixon: Well, we'll see. We'll see. It may be that they--that that one sentence was dropped out by mistake or deliberately. But don't worry about it. Since you--I didn't know--if you're home it doesn't make any difference.

Woods: Well, I just got here because I was supposed to be at--

President Nixon: We'll work it out tomorrow.

Woods: --a dinner--

President Nixon: Right.

Woods: --at five [unclear].

President Nixon: Fine. OK. Fine.

  • 1. Nixon is referring to the text of his Second Inaugural Address. As delivered, it read: "We shall respect our treaty commitments. We shall support vigorously the principle that no country has the right to impose its will or rule on another by force." See Richard Nixon, "Oath of Office and Second Inaugural Address," 20 January 1973.
