White House Operator: Here’s Mr. Bull.
Haldeman: Steve?
Stephen B. Bull: Yes, sir.
Haldeman: [Senate Majority Leader Michael J.] Mansfield∇ [D-Montana] is coming over to see the President between 10:30 and 10:45.
Bull: OK.
Haldeman: Completely off-the-record meeting. We told him to come in the southwest gate and into the EOB [Executive Office Building]. Someone should be out here to, you know, watch—catch his car and get him in here.
Bull: I’ll do it myself. Even—just bring him right in immediately?
Haldeman: To the EOB office, yeah.
Bull: All right.
Haldeman: Maybe the thing to do is call his office and have him pull in the driveway there. It’s raining.
Bull: Oh, in the—
Haldeman: EOB driveway.
Bull: The only thing is that if it’s really off the record, then we hustle him past quite a few people. Can we just pull him right up to the steps? I’d just have an umbrella?
Haldeman: You go up the steps, the press can see him. You go in the driveway, the only people that see him are the—
Bull: Oh, [unclear].
Haldeman: —the people in the building.
Bull: That’s a good idea. You’re right. OK.
Haldeman: I don’t think you see very many people. You pull in the driveway, walk right down the hall and up the—
Bull: Well, we’ll just . . . Right.
Haldeman: —elevator.
Bull: OK. Does anyone else know?
Haldeman: No.
Bull: OK, then I won’t tell anyone else, then. Fine.
Haldeman: Right.
Bull: OK.
Haldeman: OK?
Bull: Thank you.
