President Nixon: I'm going to have a little 15-minute chat with [Governor Nelson A.] Rockefeller [R-New York] before this meeting. Do you think you want to have people take a picture of it?
Ziegler: I don't think we need it today, Mr. President.
President Nixon: I'm thinking for purposes of New York. I mean, it's a . . . having snubbed [Mayor John V.] Lindsay [R-New York City] and so forth, I mean, I'm just thinking of the . . . see what I mean? We're . . .
Ziegler: OK, fine. Yes, sir.
President Nixon: The idea of just being [chuckling] on good relations with the governor isn't bad.
Ziegler: Right . . . right.
President Nixon: I'll talk to him, see if he feels it's a good idea.
Ziegler: Will you do it in the EOB [Executive Office Building]?
President Nixon: No, no, no, no, I'm in the Oval Office.
Ziegler: I see. Yes, sir.
President Nixon: No, we'll just have them pop in . . . on the governor and I--”have been chatting about federal, you know, federal--”
Ziegler: Fine, before the foreign intelligence--”
President Nixon: Yeah, the federal-state relations--”
Ziegler: I think it's a good idea.
President Nixon: Revenue sharing, federal-state relations, see?
Ziegler: Right.
President Nixon: That sort of thing. OK.
Ziegler: Yes, sir . . . yes, sir. Yes, sir.
