Indistinct voices can be heard in the background.

President Nixon: Yeah.

White House Operator: Mrs. [Marjorie P.] Acker.

President Nixon: Yeah.

Marjorie Acker: Hello?

President Nixon: Marje.

Acker: Yes.

President Nixon: Now, you can take this, but. . . if you will look at the . . . oh. Page 14.

Acker: Mm-hmm.

President Nixon: Page 14.

Acker: Right.

President Nixon: The sentence ending, “It has been a long and difficult trial for us.”

Acker: Yes.

President Nixon: Yeah. From there on I want you to—not for me, but for the draft you give to [Henry A.] Kissinger—to leave the conclusion in that is in the old speech. You see what I mean?

No response.

President Nixon: Let me explain. This is all a change, you know, part of it is a change, remember?

Acker: Right, the insert.

President Nixon: But where I say, “But I can assure you tonight with the confidence it’s going to . . .” Remember, that’s part of—

Acker: Yes.

President Nixon: —the insert on the yellow page?

Acker: Mm-hmm.

President Nixon: What I want you to do is to go right back to the draft that I was working on. Find that draft. You got it, in front of you?

Acker: Right.

President Nixon: All right. What does it say right after “it’s been a long and difficult trial for us”?

Acker: “But now ahead we can see the end.”

President Nixon: All right, fine.

Acker: Then “Every option taken—”

President Nixon: That sentence.

Acker: “—by this administration—”

President Nixon: That sentence. And everything else from there on—

Acker: Mm-hmm.

President Nixon: —as it was in that draft, that’s the draft you give to him.

Acker: All right.

President Nixon: Fair enough?

Acker: Yes.

President Nixon: That’s right. Just give it to him, nobody else at this point.

Acker: OK.

President Nixon: Thank you.

Acker: All right.
